Established in 1945 in California, USA by brothers-in-law Irv Robbins and Burt Baskin, Baskin-Robbins has since become a world icon for variety, quality and innovation. From its initial concept of a flavour for every day of the month, Baskin-Robbins has created a flavour vault of some 1000 ice cream flavours. Distinctive Baskin-Robbins favourites Pralines ‘n Cream, Jamoca Almond Fudge, Gold Medal Ribbon and Chocolate Mousse Royale are just a sampling of the numerous innovative Baskin-Robbins flavour creations.
Throughout its history, Baskin-Robbins has quickly “scooped” up trends and fads, to share with the world a number of fun and wonderful flavours, including Beatle Nut in tribute to Beatlemania, Baseball Nut in honor of the Dodgers’ move to Los Angeles, 0031 – Secret Bonded Flavour inspired by the James Bond films and Lunar Cheesecake celebrating mankind’s first walk on the moon.
Notably, not only did founding partners introduce variety to the ice-cream industry with their “31 flavours” concept, they also inadvertently pioneered the concept of franchising. By the late 1940s, the young entrepreneurs had eight stores and found it increasingly difficult to serve customers and manage the operations to their high standards of satisfaction. So in 1948, the men decided to license operations to individuals who would operate the stores themselves – launching the franchise concept that has evolved into a billion-dollar industry worldwide.
